WORLD NEWS

The Paris 2024 Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, aims to rekindle global enthusiasm for the Games amidst recent skepticism. With a focus on inclusivity and sustainability, Paris plans to benefit disadvantaged communities, particularly in Seine-Saint-Denis, by investing in new and refurbished sports infrastructure. The region will also house the Olympic village, which will be converted into housing and offices post-Games.

Paris has set a budget of approximately 9 billion euros, with a significant portion from private funding. Security remains a priority, and the opening ceremony plans have been scaled down due to safety concerns. The Games will introduce new sports like breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing, aiming to attract a younger audience.

The new policy is expected to broaden Southwest's appeal without compromising operational efficiency. More details will be shared during the airline's investor day in September.

HEALTH

Recent research indicates that moderate drinking does not offer health benefits or extend lifespan, contrary to previous beliefs. A meta-analysis of over 40 years of studies involving more than 4.8 million people found that earlier research suggesting benefits from moderate drinking was flawed. These studies often failed to account for factors like age, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status, which could influence outcomes.

The analysis, published in JAMA Network Open, revealed no significant reduction in death risk among moderate drinkers after adjusting for these factors. Instead, the study highlighted increased risks of various health problems and premature death, even with modest alcohol consumption. Additionally, any amount of alcohol consumption was associated with an increased risk of cancer.
