U.S. NEWS

CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, reported that many of the millions of computers that crashed on Friday due to a defective software update are back in operation. The glitch caused global disruptions, affecting about 8.5 million machines running Windows, and impacted airlines, banks, hospitals, and other critical services. Fixing the issue often required IT teams to manually delete files. CrowdStrike is now implementing a new technique to speed up the remediation process. The company's shares have dropped nearly 30%, losing billions in market value. Government regulators, including antitrust enforcers, are scrutinizing the incident, highlighting concerns about system fragility due to industry concentration.

Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, was convicted by a Russian court of spreading false information about the Russian army. Following a secret trial, she was sentenced to 6½ years in prison. The conviction occurred in Kazan, coinciding with the espionage conviction of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg, who received a 16-year sentence. The U.S. government has condemned both cases as politically motivated.

A new Commonwealth Fund report reveals significant state-by-state disparities in women's health in the U.S. Northeastern states, led by Massachusetts, scored highest for healthcare quality, outcomes, and access. Southern states, with Mississippi at the bottom, performed poorly. The study highlights rising threats to women's health, with preventable deaths and maternal mortality rates increasing, especially among Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native women. States with restrictive abortion laws and lack of Medicaid expansion had higher uninsured rates and fewer maternity care providers, exacerbating health disparities. The report urges policymakers to address these gaps to ensure equitable healthcare access.

Bruce Springsteen now has an approximate net worth of over a billion dollars, according to estimates by Forbes, officially making Springsteen a billionaire. On top of that, such calculations are on the “conservative” side, Deadline notes.
